- First download Desktop version of ubuntu iso file from ubuntu site,
- Burn it into CD or mount it to virtual CD Drive.
- If you havent disabled autorun, the window opens with various installation options, otherwise you have to browse CD and double click wubi.exe.
- From window choose "Install in windows"
- Allocate the space for ubuntu
- choose the username and password for ubuntu (Note, remember it and both of them are case sensitive in Linux)
- Click install

In around 20 minutes your ubuntu will be installed in your windows xp. Don't worry it won't touch your windows installation. In startup you will then get two option Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu
Choose "Ubuntu", and hold it till the installation is complete.....now you can use ubuntu so easily.

Enjoy ubuntu!!

Important
you wont be able to browse  other files created in windows from ubuntu in the drive you've installed ubuntu...but you can browse files in other drives.

well after restart and choosing ubuntu from the startup option it would take bit time to load the setup in ubuntu's interface. I have mounted the iso file with magic iso. Try going to window and try running the setup again, choose maximum possible disk space and provide appropriate username and password for ubuntu.
